Connect SA National Technology Challenge

The Connect SA National Technology Challenge is an initiative between Palcard Connect Africa, the Department of Education and Private Sector in the promotion of Maths, Science, Technology and Accounting talent in South African High Schools.

The challenge focuses on Maths, Science, Technology and Accounting as critical subjects.  The challenge aims to encourage young people to focus on these subjects and subsequently follow careers in the critical skill areas.

Objectives

The objective of the challenge is to facilitate a competition in which various schools participate.  Through the competition, we aim to encourage creative thinking, problem solving, originality and application of mathematical, accounting and scientific principles in a real world environment.

We also aim to show-case, profile and expose talent to sponsors, universities, parents, technikons, and all the intended parties.  During the competition, learners are presented problems requiring solution through design of projects, or concepts to solve problems.

Apart from the competition, the most fundamental objective of the challenge is:

  • To support government efforts in improving the human resource balance sheet by ensuring a systematic development of talent, to focus on critical skills in the economy e.g. engineering, technology, biotech, medicine, etc.
  • Support private sector to meet targets set in the transformation scorecards with respect to various charter processes in line with DTI codes of good practice
  • To create a workplace investment hub, a database of competent and qualified persons in the critical skills areas, as well as provide a tracking mechanism for such talent
  • To offer support to learners through co-coordinating sponsorships, bursaries, financial support to enable them to access tertiary education
  • To provide continuous mentorship to learners thought their learning, creating a balance between what they learn at school and the expectations of the economy (workplace).
